Capitol Hill lawmakers briefed about security measures taken in wake of Capitol chaos

House and Senate lawmakers received security briefings on Tuesday in response to the mob assault on the Capitol building complex last Wednesday.

House Democrats and Republicans were briefed by House Sergeant-at-Arms Tim Blodgett, acting U.S. Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman, and acting U.S. Capitol Police Assistant Chief Sean Gallagher about the attack and additional security protocols in place.

The protocols include magnetometers being used for members to enter the House floor chamber and enforcement of masks being worn on the House floor. Members who do not comply with wearing a mask on the floor will face a $2,500 fine.

Additionally, Pittman notified the lawmakers that further steps were taken to harden the U.S. Capitol complex, including 1,000 National Guardsmen already on site and an 8-foot, no-scale fence around the Capitol square.

Further security will be in place for the House impeachment vote on Wednesday and the presidential inauguration next week. This includes expanding the outer perimeter, additional armed National Guardsmen, uniformed Secret Service officers, and razor wire that will be installed on the fence surrounding the perimeter of the U.S. Capitol grounds.

Members learned from Gallagher that a number of protests are planned leading up to and on Inauguration Day, noting that some of the demonstrations specified violence but nothing of a foreign threat.

Senators received a security briefing Tuesday afternoon about inauguration security, a Senate source said. Briefers included officials from the Defense Department, the Secret Service, and the Department of Homeland Security. “Very simply: we will do everything in our power to prevent such an attack from ever happening again,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told his colleagues in a letter.
