President Donald Trump’s approval numbers are rising while Democrats focus on his impeachment reminded Dick Morris of a past presidential scandal, the former Democratic strategist and White House adviser told Newsmax TV.
“Once again, Democrats clearly are overplaying their hand,” Morris told host Grant Stinchfield on Tuesday’s Stinchfield. “When I worked with [President Bill] Clinton, I watched them do this over the [Monica] Lewinsky scandal and each day that they were pushing impeachment, the Republicans back then, their ratings dropped and Clinton’s rose.
“In fact, it led to the first time in American history that the president’s party gained seats in the off-year election. First time in 200 years of history that happened and the Democrats now are right on target to do the same thing.”
New data released by pollster John McLaughlin found that 77 percent of voters said Congress should work on the coronavirus response instead of impeachment, and 74 percent said impeachment was “politically motivated to prevent the president from running again.”
Morris, saying Trump’s approval rating of 49 percent was higher than during the campaign, added the president’s numbers will improve even more after Americans see what President-elect Joe Biden does once in office.
“When they see what Biden is gonna to do, like with illegal immigration, basically opening the borders,” Morris said, “and he proudly said in the campaign, ‘In the first hundred days, I will inoculate a hundred million Americans,’ and he’s probably going to do a third of that.
“People will really see that this guy is a corpse, not a president. I’ve always said he doesn’t need a consultant, he needs a taxidermist.”
