Former Chinese Premier Li Peng, who is largely regarded for his position in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, died Monday at age 90, The Linked Press reviews.

A state information company explained Li died in Beijing of an unspecified sickness, in accordance to the AP.

Li, who served as premier from 1987 to 1998, took a controversial position in overseeing the crackdown on professional-democracy, pupil-led protests that killed hundreds in Tiananmen Square 30 many years in the past, declaring martial law on nationwide tv and turning out to be a big encounter of the crackdown.
