Fugitive child sex abuse suspect busted at Connecticut gas station

A Florida fugitive charged with sexually assaulting two children over the span of several years has been arrested in Connecticut, federal officials said.

Maurice Lewis, 33, was busted Wednesday in Branford in connection to child sex abuse charges in Florida, the US Marshals Service announced Thursday on Twitter.

Lewis, who was sought on a warrant issued in August, was taken into custody at a gas station after investigators tracked him to the area. He was arrested without incident, the Stamford Advocate reported late Wednesday.

Lewis was charged by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office with two counts of lewd or lascivious molestation of a minor after a woman told Florida deputies in 2017 that he had inappropriately touched her 9- and 17-year-old children, according to an affidavit obtained by the New Haven Register.

The woman reported one of her children told her the man — later identified as Lewis — had molested her since they lived in Connecticut more than two years earlier, the affidavit states.

Authorities in Florida proceeded to add extra officers near the woman’s home to ensure Lewis — who had been living in a car in her driveway with her consent at the time — didn’t return to the residence, authorities said.

The woman’s children accused Lewis of assaulting them for years, including instances when they lived in Connecticut. One of the children alleged the attacks took place over the span of seven years, the affidavit states.

The woman told investigators she found out Lewis left Florida after she reported the alleged abuse, possibly back to Connecticut, authorities said.

A detective later spoke to Lewis on the phone in May 2017, at which point he said was living in south Florida with a friend but promised to arrange a time to meet her, the affidavit states.

Lewis failed to return the call and the detective reached him again about a month later, when he promised to meet her in the coming days. He then failed to show up a second time and changed his phone number, authorities said.

Lewis, who remains in custody of Connecticut State Police, is now awaiting extradition to Florida, the New Haven Register reports.

A message seeking additional comment from the US Marshals Service was not immediately returned Friday.
