Rep. Clyburn: ‘Tent Big Enough’ for Biden to Add Progressives

House Majority Whip James Clyburn Tuesday urged Joe Biden to add some more progressive picks as he chooses members of his Cabinet and administration.

“There are a lot of young people out there and some not-so-young people, like Bernie Sanders, I wish would come into the administration,” the South Carolina Democrat, who is 80 years old, said on CNN’s “New Day.” “Bernie has a way of getting people to understand certain things. I think that we are a big tent. We are a tent big enough to hold young people and some not-so-young people. That’s why I’m hanging in here.”

Biden has announced several key administration members in recent days, with most being familiar names of people who have been in Washington, D.C., for some years, including John Kerry as his climate czar and Ron Klain as his chief of staff.

The picks come as President Donald Trump continues to contest the election. Newsmax has not yet called the race.

Clyburn said Biden has room for some of the up-and-coming members of his party as well, such as Georgia political powerhouse Stacey Abrams, former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, and the “Jaime Harrisons.”

However, Biden is picking some people who are “status quo,” including Janet Yellen as treasury secretary, Kerry, and Antony Blinken as secretary of state, said Clyburn.

“So much of what these men and women have been doing was building on history, so that they have a better future,” said Clyburn. “We had a president to come in and just undercut all of that.”

Meanwhile, Clyburn said there is “no question” in his mind that Biden is the winner of the election, but there may need to be points revisited after the delay for the General Services Administration to ascertain Biden as the winner and release transition funding.

“She didn’t pay attention to that,” he said, referring to GSA Administrator Emily Murphy. “I don’t think it’s any need to worry about whether or not she is right or wrong. Let’s just go forward.”

Now that the transition can move forward, Biden’s team will get the information it needs, including on coronavirus and the upcoming vaccine campaign, Clyburn said.
