Rep. Pete Meijer Likely to Face GOP Primary for Impeachment Vote

Barely two hours after he became one of 10 House Republicans to vote Wednesday for the second impeachment of President Donald Trump, freshman Rep. Pete Meijer, R-Mich., was considered likely to face a pro-Trump primary challenger in 2022.

“I think it’s a pretty safe bet to say there will be challenges to all of the 10 Republicans [in the House] who voted for impeachment,” veteran Michigan Republican pollster Steve Mitchell told Newsmax. “And you can count on Donald Trump campaigning for every one of them.”

Mitchell cited a YouGov poll earlier this month, showing among Republicans nationwide, President Trump holds an 83% approval rating. Of this group, Mitchell noted, “49 percent said they strongly approve of Trump and 34% said they generally approve of him.”

Such numbers, the veteran pollster told us, “don’t portend well for a Republican who breaks with Trump.”

He suggested one of the conservative state legislators from the Water Wonderland’s 3rd District (Grand Rapids) could take on Meijer in a primary next year. Among the possible contenders are State Reps. Matt Hall of the Emmett Township, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, and Steve Johnson, self-styled “constitutional conservative” and member of the Christian Reformed Church.

Last year, U.S. Army Reserve officer, Meijer, 33, won the three-candidate Republican primary for the seat once held by President Gerald Ford, in part because of his recognition from the eponymous supermarket chain. Vice President Mike Pence and House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., gave him their endorsement before the primary.

Sources close to Meijer said he was not a Trump Republican but did not saying anything critical of the president during the primary. After the election, he immediately declared his belief Joe Biden won and dismissed doubts about the voting by Trump supporters as “lies.”
