Two teenagers dead in California after Black Friday mall shooting

Two teenagers died after a shooting at a mall in Sacramento, California.

Two males, one 19 and the other 17, were shot on Friday night at Arden Fair mall. The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The 17-year-old died several hours later at the hospital, according to the city’s police department.

Neither victim has been identified.

When shots were heard at the mall, patrons of the shops quickly evacuated.

“Heard a couple of shots go off, didn’t really think anything of it,” one mall employee told the Sacramento Bee. “And more and more kept going off, so everyone started running toward our back room. … Everyone just started running.”

“We are awaiting more details on this tragic incident,” Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg wrote in a text message to the paper. “We are deeply concerned by the increase in gun violence in Sacramento and other cities since the onset of COVID-19, and have supported increasing our city’s efforts to reach young people who are at risk. A gun is never the answer.”

While the suspect was still at large as of Saturday morning, the Sacramento Police Department said in a statement that “detectives believe this shooting is an isolated incident and not the result of an active shooter.”
